Subacute Thyroiditis is considered as a self-limited thyroid condition and can be a destructive thyroiditis resulting in the release of preformed thyroid hormone and not in new synthesis of thyroid hormone. Thyroiditis generally refers to any swelling or inflammation of the thyroid.
Subacute thyroiditis is a condition associated with triphasic clinical course of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and return to normal thyroid function. A characteristic finding in this thyrotoxic condition is a very low radioactive iodine uptake by the thyroid.
SUBACUTE THYROIDITIS SYMPTOMS
Subacute thyroiditis may be responsible for 15-20% of patients with thyrotoxicosis and 10% of patients presenting with hypothyroidism. So some symptoms involve to the usual mile and symptoms mimic with some diseases to very complicated symptoms involving in thyrotoxicosis .
Mild symptoms involves like pain in the neck radiating to the jaw and ears. Having a very painful goiter (lump in the neck between the jaw and the collarbone. Difficulty in swallowing, having fever with temperature from 38-39 degrees Celsius. Malaise, patients will have nausea, vomiting increase heart rate, palpitation, anxiety, tremor and muscle excitability, and diarrhea. There are symptoms of thyrotoxicosis that includes weight loss despite of increase appetite, lid lag and stare, sinus tachycardia, fine tremor and muscle weakness, nervousness. SUBACUTE THYROIDITIS TREATMENT
Subacute thyroiditis is self-limiting and there is no specific therapy or treatment in regards to this disease. But the purpose of this treatment is to reduce the pain and even the inflammation and treat hyperthyroidism if in case it will occur.
Treatment like anti-inflammatory medications for example; aspirin or ibuprofen are use to control pain in mild cases. And to more serious cases doctors prescribe temporary treatment with steroids like for example prednisone to control inflammation.
The symptoms may be treated with beta blockers for example propanol, atenolol. While antithyroid drugs are not effective in treating this condition. Thyroid supplements maybe needed in case of low or to little thyroid hormone.
SUBACUTE THROIDITIS CAUSE
The cause of subacute thyroiditis involves hypothyroidism that usually results from the dysfunction of thyroid. And also the cause of having iodine deficiency, a goiter result from lack of iodine in the diet.
